There are a variety of ways in which to assess culture

Direct sources such as:
Anthropological observation of managerial and employee behaviors and rituals
Examination of company documents, practices and artifacts
  Indirect sources such as:
    Surveys of employees' perceptions
In-depth interviews with managers and employees

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages

  Direct methods:
Provide an “objective” view but are very time consuming and costly to undertake
They may biased based on the perspective of those doing the analyzing and do not necessarily explain people's behavior
  Indirect methods:
Are less costly and provide a quickly, systematic and empirical assessment of culture as perceived by those immersed in it
Are more likely to explain how people interpret culture and react to it
May not provide an “objective view”
